Burnt Breakfast
Spider in Times Square | By Samuel Strathman
A shadow descends
toward the arachnid
like a derailed
freightliner.
The crawler shivers
in waves, a parted
forest.
Heavy lies the anvil,
a chasm made
with the force
of a hundred
thousand windchimes.
When the dust
settles, Times Square
is a swimming pool,
moats spanning for days.

Samuel Strathman is a poet, author, educator, and co-editor at Cypress: A Literary Journal.
